Weiden, Germany

This week we had an unexpected trip to a smaller city in Bayern, Germany called Weiden. One of the head prosecutors invited the husband to attend a presentation he was giving on the RAF (Red Army Faction) --a German leftist terrorist group from the 70s. The prosecutor generously extended the invitation to me as well.

If you know nothing about the RAF, it has an extreme and long history with three generations of active members from 1970-1998.  It was responsible for numerous terrorist acts and the assasinations of several prominent German legal figures.

Wanted poster.
For doing absolutely nothing in return, I was able to come, listen to the presentation about the RAF, eat, drink, and sight-see. Amazing!  We also got to tag along on a personalized tour, led by the President of a regional court in Bayern, around the region.
Our hotel room.  Is this really work for someone?

In case you didn't know, we are important enough to get this kind of room. ???????? How did we pull this off?

Town square in front of our hotel.  Fall is crawling all over the building.

Medieval city walls.

The medieval government house and Pranger (Pillory in English) where people were strapped in and subjected to public humilation and abuse as punishment for crimes.

With the prosecutor in front of the Pranger.  The irony of posing with a modern-day prosecutor in front of a medieval sentencing device was not lost on me.  I love this photo!

The court room of the President of the regional court in Weiden.

Visiting the reconstruction project of an old bridge and building that once served as the summer residence of a royal family and a local court.

Two important legal figures giving David a personal German history lesson.  Lucky.

Arial shot of the Waldsassen Abbey we visited.

Private tour of the famous library at Waldsassen Abbey.  Check out the woodwork and hand carved bookshelves.

This was our favorite carving.

Second favorite carving.  He had two little mice hidden in his beard.

Our hosts treated us to WeiƟwurst and pretzels, a Bavarian specialty.

Me trying to look professional, like I belong there, not just as "the wife"

Okay, I couldn't act too professionally once I realized that fall is in full swing!
